Dental Cleaning
A dental cleaning is performed in two important steps: scaling followed by polishing.
Scaling
Scaling removes calcified deposits from the surfaces of the teeth and below the gums. These deposits form when dental plaque mineralizes and can irritate the tissues of the mouth.
Regular visits with a dental hygienist are therefore important to remove tartar and help prevent complications such as tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis.
The hygienist uses instruments adapted to each tooth surface, as well as ultrasonic devices that make deposits easier to remove. These devices are painless and especially useful when a significant amount of tartar is present.
Polishing
Polishing removes bacteria from the surfaces of the teeth, along with certain stains caused by food or lifestyle habits such as coffee, red wine and tobacco.
The hygienist polishes the teeth with a rotating rubber cup and a paste specially designed not to damage enamel.
