Pit and Fissure Sealants 2026

Pit and Fissure Sealants

Pit and fissure sealants are a preventive treatment that fills the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth with a small amount of tooth-coloured resin.

This barrier protects the enamel by preventing bacteria and food from settling in pits and fissures. Because toothbrush bristles have difficulty reaching these areas, the treatment makes the entire surface easier to clean and helps prevent cavities.

Sealant is applied easily, without altering the tooth and without anesthesia. It is effective at preventing surface cavities on teeth with deep grooves and can last for several years.

At what age?

The ideal age is generally between 5 and 7, after the first permanent molars appear, and again between 11 and 14, after the second permanent molars appear. Since a tooth is not fully mineralized immediately after eruption, this treatment is an excellent way to protect it.
